Easter Egg Hunt Sneak Peek!

April 20, 2011 by Logan Leave a Comment

Been a busy day…getting ready for the Easter Egg Hunt at our House on Saturday!  Thought I’d share a sneak peek of what I’ve been working on!
This corkboard that I made from and old frame and wine corks that we have collected over time is part of the table centerpiece.

I made these tissue paper pom pom flowers from a great tutorial I found on Martha Stewart.com.  So cute!

The one on the drink station is tied around my buffet lampshade!  I just wired the leafy branch to the base.

This pendant banner is seen as you enter the foyer and the dining room is on the right through this doorway.  That scripture above the doorway is always there…Love me some vinyl lettering.  That particular one says “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.”

Ok.  That’s all I’m gonna give you right now.  More to come!  Sorry for the late post today!  Met with a fab-o blog designer this morning and had a friend here this afternoon.  Get excited friends, Life for Dessert will soon have a super fun facelift!

I’m Pretty Keen on These…

April 19, 2011 by Logan 4 Comments

These are quite possibly the best shoes known to kid-kind.

They rank pretty highly in the man and woman-kind category as well, but in the realm of kids…I give them 2 seriously hearty thumbs up!  In fact, I’ll even go ahead and raise my third thumb to these…ok ok, so I don’t have a third thumb.  I was just going for extra emphasis.

Tid bit has had a pair every year since he turned one.  Little Bit is now wearing Tid Bit’s first pair.  And, we’ve had them in several colors… because happily, they are available in tons of different colors.

What are these magic shoes you might ask?

Keen Newport H2’s that’s what!
I’m going to go ahead now and provide a big fat bummer of a disclaimer by saying that in no way shape or form am I being compensated for this smashing review.  Keen didn’t send me a new pair for myself or my kids to test.  Noone called and asked what I thought about them.  Not a soul.  This is plain and simple my opinion about a product that I think is quite frankly fantastic.  So there…if you were wondering what’s in it for me…here’s your answer.
  Absolutely Nothing!
Bummer… but…moving along.  I might lose a load of readers with the following comment, but if you want me to really be me, the following statement allows me to remain true to myself.
I am not a fan of Crocs.
And moreover, I have never been a fan.  While I realize that they make some cute ballet flat style ones now, and Mary Janes….the plain old kind that the free world wears…the clunky looking slip on ones…yeah, I think they’re ugly.   I don’t even feel swayed by the rainbow of colors they come in either.  And, I think they are impractical for kids.  They don’t stay on well on a jungle gym.  Dirt and mulch and rocks creep in from any one of the massive gaps around a kids foot….and oh yeah, I think they’re ugly.  Wait…I already said that.  If Crocs would like to send me a pair to change my mind, I’ll be happy to try them…but not this style please.  I still think they are ugly.
You may be asking why I’m hating on Crocs…and I’m really not a total hater. It probably all stems from the confession that I jumped on a bandwagon of ugly, yet comfortable shoes once upon a time… and I still look at them in my closet and 99.9% of the time I choose something else.  And you know what…. they are ugly…and thus, I really hardly ever wear them.  Yep.  On the right.  Those are the ones.  If you have them and love them…it’s probably because you must significantly value comfort over even remote stylishness. Whoever tried to make them stylish was clearly one of you.  Either that or you legitimately wear them on a boat….and for that I salute you for dressing for the part.  Anyways, I digress.
All of this is really meant to say… when it comes to dressing my kids, there are times when one shoe can, in fact, cover pretty much all of our bases.  And the Keen Newport H2 fits that bill.  They are about as cute as a water shoe can possibly be.  They can be worn in the water…think hiking up a river, or playing in a creek.  I happen to be of the opinion that they are even better for kids than any other river sandal because they have a tough rubber toe cover to protect your baby’s little piggies!  You can wash them in the washing machine…or probably even in the dishwasher if you really wanted.  They are rugged and tough.  Kids can run in them, go to the pool in them, hike in them, wear them to school, in the mud, in the sand.  Seriously, these are the 4-wheel-drive of kids shoes I am sure.  And…they are velcro, so they can put them on themselves….or you can do it quickly.
Really, if you’re in the market for a good pair of shoes that will survive the toughness that your kids will dish out, these are the shoes for you.  You can find them all over the internet or in most good outdoor stores too.  Buy a previous season’s color for an even better deal.  They run about $50, but I promise you they are well worth it.  After all, they are supporting the cutest little people you know.  It’s like investing in a good bra…some things are just worth supporting well. (But that’s another post for another day!)
As you can tell, I’m Keen on these shoes, and I’m pretty sure you will be too!

Sharecropping…

April 18, 2011 by Logan 1 Comment

I have to tell you something about where we live…our neighborhood that is.  It’s the kind of neighborhood with a great blend of families with young kids, families with teenagers, families with college students, empty nesters, and full fledged grandparents….and we absolutely LOVE it!  The yards are big and full of trees and mature shrubbery, flowers, etc…truly, it’s lovely.  And everyone for the most part takes real pride and joy in being part of this community.  And today, well I saw members of our neighborhood come together in a way that I just think is how community really should function.

In a world where life is spent mostly in the fast lane, or the drive through, or the self service check out, or within the confines of a fenced-in yard….well, it just seems that people don’t invest in one another quite like they used to do…before my time that is.  Back in the day where a barn raising was an occasion for everyone to band together and help their neighbors,  or people would spend long summer afternoons “taking a turn about their gardens” just to spend time together. Seems to me that in a lot of ways, those days have been replaced by a modern hunger for self-satisfaction…leaving little room for selflessness… little room for true community.

But today, today I saw community at it’s finest!

A couple from our neighborhood has the most fabulous garden.  Tid Bit calls it the “Secret Garden” because of it’s winding pathways and lush plant life.  There is also a full vegetable garden, complete with loads of fruit trees… and the best part is that they are beyond generous with it all!  They have allowed me to clip flowers from their gardens for any party, as well as sharing the most wonderful tomatoes, baskets and baskets of plums, corn, okra, figs…you name it, if they have it, they share it.  So much that we quite look forward to certain seasons when we know we will get to go enjoy the fruits of their gardens!

The gentleman of the gardens (we’ll call him Mr Neighbor-Gardener) was recently struck too ill to be able to do all of his usual planting and so his Mrs. asked for some help from friends and neighbors. They provided a barbeque lunch and then everyone set to planting according to the instruction of our neighbor (who is a Master Gardener and full of wise gardening instruction!)

Check this out!

<—-There is Tid Bit in the background planting some seeds.  He was taking his work very seriously.  Also, I noticed when I was looking through these pictures that the lady in the foreground was wearing a shirt that said “Life is Simple” and I thought to myself how true that felt yesterday watching everyone pitch in to help out a friend.

Look at all the people who came out to help! In the end everyone planted tomatoes, cantalope, okra, beans, corn, and more!

I love this picture.  I love watching the friend push our neighbor to the best place for him to give good instruction, and I LOVE seeing Tid Bit following along…ready to receive instruction, and clearly excited to be helping out.  He insisted that he’d need his kid-sized wheelbarrow and looks like he was right!

Mr. Neighbor-Gardener is the nicest man.  He, by the way, is always in a wheelchair and does this garden every single year…from the chair.  Now if that’s not a kick in the pants for not making excuses, then I don’t know what is.  We have the MOST respect for this man!  He is kind and generous in word and deed.

I so enjoy seeing my husband teaching our boy how to serve others…and to do it well.  Both of my guys had the best time working together and being a part of something bigger than themselves.  It’s good to see people come together for the good of others!

I got all of these pictures from Mrs. Neighbor-Gardener who sent them out yesterday as “proof of our sharecropping status!”  I couldn’t help but think that sharecropping or not…helping people when they need it really is being the hands and feet of Jesus.

And last night, it was a pleasure cleaning dirt off of those little hands that learned that lesson well.

Food for Thought…The Goo in the Pan

April 17, 2011 by Logan 1 Comment

Remember all the cooking I’ve been doing this week?  Well, when I made the Fig and Sausage Salad for Friday night’s meal deliveries, I made a mess in my pan that looked very similarly to this loveliness on the left.  My mess was actually worse because it was from caramelizing onions.  It was the kind of burnt on mess that if I understood chemical reactions, I’d swear that the onion juice had somehow formed an impenetrable chemical bond with the bottom of my pan.  I don’t understand chemical reactions though…but I am fairly certain that actual scenario isn’t actually possible.

So it soaked overnight and then when i still couldn’t get it off, I stuck it in the dishwasher to see if that helped at all.

It didn’t.  But I think I really knew that.  I just wanted to buy myself another day before I had to deal with it.  Because the stuff had to come off, lest it ruin every subsequent thing I endeavor to cook in that pan.  I could avoid it, but I couldn’t leave it.

So this morning, when I was unloading the dishwasher, there it was waiting for me in all of it’s burnt on glory.

This pan called for a heavy duty cleaner….

And… some help from The Hubs!

We alternated scrubbing the burnt on mess for probably almost 30 minutes until it was finally clean again.  And while I was finishing up, I started thinking…

How often in my own life do I have some sort of caked on mess that I push aside to avoid dealing with?
And the reality is that happens probably a lot more than I really care to admit.  But eventually you know you have to get around to dealing with it…Or, you keep pushing it off, but then you burn everything else you set to cook in the pan of your life.
I’ve done that too.
I was thinking as I scrubbed that pan until it shone this morning about how God will scrub us sometimes to set us clean again.  And a few verses came to mind….
Psalm 51:10 – Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Or how about… Phillipians 1:6 – “that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Both encouraging.  And I was thinking about the promise of creating something clean…and completing a good work.  But I was also reminded that cleaning off some nasty stuck on goo isn’t always a pretty or painless process.
The goo got there because I let it happen.
I didn’t stir the onions as frequently as I should have because I was busy doing other things at the same time.  Or maybe I didn’t forgive someone when I should have because that just wasn’t something I was up to doing that day.  Or maybe I let too much time pass after an argument with my husband….or didn’t show grace to my kids when I knew that I should’ve.  Or maybe I put too much of my trust in people…and not in God.
And thus, the goo builds up...
So today, I was thinking to myself… What goo in my life do I need to take a Brillo pad to in order to clean it up?  And when the Lord gently scrubs that goo, will I be angry at him for cleaning ever so gently? (Because still sometimes even when gentle, the Brillo can chafe.  But then again, it’s that very action that gets it clean.)  Or can I keep my eyes on the God of the clean pan that I know I want my life to be in the end?  A pan that will make a great meal, or create a delicious sauce… a pan that delivers goodness when it’s in use?
I’m pretty sure I know which kind of pan I want to be.  Do you?

The Dinner Deliverer

April 15, 2011 by Logan 2 Comments

I’m gonna be honest.  Today I sort of have writer’s block.  And I don’t know that I really have it or if I’m just so busy with everything else I’m trying to accomplish today that I shouldn’t really even be stopping right now to write this post.

I took dinner to a friend with a new baby last night.  Tonight I’m taking dinner to another friend who just had a baby last week, and made extra of that meal to actually then take with me to the hospital to a friend who had a baby about 3 hours ago.  Nothing better than good food when you’re in the hospital.  I ate so much jello in the hospital with both of my kids, I really thought I’d died and gone to heaven when our friends Stuart and Greta brought me a Subway turkey sandwich.  Who’d have ever thought Subway would leave you in some sort of foodie bliss?!

I want to add here as well that in my humble personal opinion, there is really not much more amazingness that you can do for a friend than to bring them a meal in times of need.  When we have had both of our kids, the meals have been so incredibly appreciated I can’t even tell you.  And when I miscarried not one but 2 babies, each time the meals were ways my friends could hug my neck with more than just their arms.  And when someone dies…and you don’t know when you’ll breathe normally again….to not worry about a grocery list or actually going to the store or preparing a meal….heaven on a plate makes it’s way to your door in the form of the grace of a meal prepared.  Or when you’ve had one of those weeks where everything honestly just wears you out and a friend calls and says “Hey, I made a big pot of soup and we don’t need it all…I’m bringing you some”….well you know they did it on purpose and you couldn’t be happier!  Anyhow….make someone a meal.  Whether the need is obvious or maybe more subtle….make a meal….take a meal….hug their neck by filling their bellies!  Trust me, it’s a good way to love!

So, I just got sidetracked on apparently what is more of a soapbox than I realized it was…all to say…I’ve been cooking like a mad woman today.   So I cooked Loaded Quiche yesterday and the Fig and Sausage Salad for tonight.  Since Tid Bit was in school this morning I did have time to whip up a couple of those Toasted Coconut Cream Pies I’ve told you about as well.  I could seriously stick my head in the bowl of that filling and spend hours licking it before coming up for air.  Seriously…it’s that good.

Anyhow, I’m thankful that we have a day with no plans tomorrow.  I still have to get my act in gear around this house for our Easter Egg Hunt next weekend.  I’ve been messing with some things on my dining room table centerpiece lately too.  I’ll have to show you that sometime soon.  It doesn’t look fully awesome yet because it will depend heavily on the flowers my neighbor said I can pick from her amazing garden next Friday.  Here’s to crossing my fingers that her peonies are blooming…fat chance, but you never know!

Ok…I better finish up these salads so I can make a dinner delivery as soon as the littlest one wakes up from nap.  Seems my almost 5 year old has finally over the past 2 weeks truly come to the point of giving up the afternoon nap.  I have to say, I’m pretty bummed about that.  I do enjoy the quiet each afternoon!  Farewell naptime…I do love you and won’t mind if you still visit the bigger boy from time to time!

Hope the weather wherever you are is as glorious as it is over my house right now!

What’s for Dinner?! Loaded Quiche!

April 14, 2011 by Logan 5 Comments

For the longest time my husband refused to eat quiche.  He said it was a girly food…like the cucumber sandwich and strawberry soup kind of girly food.  I’ve always loved it, so I set out to find a really good basic quiche recipe and make it better.  And since then in our house, quiche has become a refrigerator clean-out sort of food.  You know when you have some ingredients that don’t have much life left on them but you can’t figure exactly what to do with them all in one dish….well, make a quiche.  And now, it’s become a favorite among my family and our friends.  Today I’m making one to take to a friend who just had a baby, per her request.  And as easy as they are to make, I’m delighted to oblige.  Throw in some fresh fruit and a side salad, and we have one healthy, hearty, and fresh tasting meal.  And…you can make it in the morning!

The basic recipe requires 1 pie crust, 5 eggs, and 1 1/2c half and half.  Add some Lawrys seasoning, fresh ground pepper, and that’s the basics.

But honestly, I think basic can get boring.  So I like to spice it up.  Besides, if you’re gonna be cleaning out your fridge, you’re gonna move away from boring really quickly anyhow.

So, consider the following that I personally think you should always include.

  • Some variety of sauteed onion (whether it’s onion, leeks, shallots, etc….they pack some serious flavor punch.)  I always put garlic as well…no matter which other of these I use too.
  • Meat (bacon, sausage, chicken, leftover steak pieces, ham, etc)
  • Cheese….and usually a couple of kinds (I often have cheddar, and then maybe brie, goat cheese, jalapeno cheddar, feta, whatever you have in your fridge!)
  • Veggies…I usually put fresh spinach leaves, & tomato (also try things like broccoli, artichoke, etc.)

Pre-bake the pie shell til it’s golden brown (usually on about 425 for 10-15minutes.)  I typically always either make a pastry if I don’t have any, but the easiest is to use the frozen deep dish shells, or the pre-rolled out pastry dough.

While that’s baking, if you’re using an uncooked meat like bacon or sausage, then go ahead and cook that fully.  Today I’m using bacon.  I pre-cut it into small pieces with a pair of awesome kitchen shears that I have by Cutco and then cooked it til it was crispy.  I highly recommend snagging a pair of these if you can.  I use them to trim chicken, cut through those annoying plastic things on kids toys, etc.  They will even cut a penny in half!

Drain the bacon on a paper towel and then put it in the bottom of the baked pie shell.

Reserve a couple Tbsp of bacon grease (I used peppered bacon so that the grease is even yummier) and put your leeks or onions and garlic in the grease to saute til cooked.

Then layer that on top of the bacon in the crust.

Next goes the fresh spinach and sliced tomato!
(Mine were a tad wrinkly…not awesome for raw eating, but perfect for a quiche!)

Today in my fridge I had some jalapeno monterey jack, cheddar, and goat cheese….so what you see below is a mix of all 3!  I always put the cheese on last because it sort of creates a crust on top once you add the egg/half and half mixture.

I always make at least 2 quiches at a time because it’s so easy and they freeze well.
So here you see 10 eggs and 3c half and half.  I put probably 1/2 tsp Lawrys seasoned salt, 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper, and a dash of nutmeg in the mixture.  Beat it well.

My mom taught me this handy trick for making quiche.  Since the egg and half and half mixture makes the quiche runny, it’s best to put them on a pan in the oven and THEN pour the egg mixture in.  Also if any bubbles over, make sure you have a pan beneath or you’ll have a nasty burned mess in the bottom of your oven.

Bake them at 375 for about 45 minutes or until lightly browned on top and they don’t jiggle in the center at all.  You want to let them set for about 15 minutes before you cut them as well.  I often make them in the morning and just heat it up again for supper for about 20 minutes with a piece of foil covering the top so that the crust doesn’t burn.

So…if you’re looking for something easy to make that’s yummy.  Give this a shot!  My absolute favorite combo is the ingredients above but instead of the jalapeno monterey jack cheese, I love brie and goat cheese with the cheddar.

Oftentimes when I make a flank steak (I’ll share that recipe next time I make it) and we have leftovers, I’ll put pieces of that with sauteed onions and mushrooms and a spicy cheese to make a quiche.  Another good one is to use rotisserie chicken with sundried tomatoes, spinach, feta, and artichokes.   Some other things that can be fun to add… roasted red peppers, swiss cheese, thinly sliced zucchini, shrimp or crabmeat….get creative and have fun with it!

And the final product today….
(it’ll settle down, but if I want to finish this post…you’ll have to see it puffy straight out of the oven!

Bon Apetit!

How to….Cut a Leek

April 13, 2011 by Logan 2 Comments

If you are just joining us today, please make sure to read the post I did about an hour ago.  This one is helpful, but that one will make you pee in your pants.  So, if you’re in an office now, or if you’re pregnant and already struggling with incontinence, take this moment to go relieve yourself.  Then come back, learn how to cut a leek and read today’s earlier post on To Pose or Not to Pose…Maternity Photos.

I taught you how to cut an onion awhile back.  And hopefully it helped you become more efficient in the kitchen so that one day you can win The Amazing Race if they ever have an onion cutting challenge again….or you can just get dinner ready faster with your kids dogs nipping at your heels while you cook.  Today I thought that I’d show you how to cut and clean a leek.  If you don’t know what a leek is, click HERE to see what Wikipedia has to say about it.  If you don’t want to do that…just know that it’s in the onion and garlic family and they are great to cook with.  I’m making quiche tomorrow (I’ll share the recipe for that then) using leeks.  And, a leek looks like this.

Leeks are really dirty.  Must be in the way they grow, but there is grunge between every layer.

I’m gonna show you how to cut and clean them the easy way…the way a chef taught me.

First order of business is cutting.  Don’t even think about trying to clean them first…it’s a pain and then the cutting will be worse too.  Trust me, you’ll just make a mess and never want to use leeks again.  And you shouldn’t decide that…they are fantastic.

I drew a line on the leek to show you where to make your first cut.  Use a paring knife.  You want to make a series of shallow cuts for this first part.  The dark green part of the leek isn’t good to eat, but if you just chopped the whole thing off where the dark green starts, then you’d waste a good portion of the usable leek.

So what you’re going to do is make a series of cuts to remove only one layer of the husk at a time.  Move outwards towards the end so that each time you cut, you’re just cutting away the dark green.  You want to preserve the super pale greenish part because it is tender and good to use.

<—-See how I did it there.  How far each cut should be will depend on your leek.  Just make sure you’re removing the hard stalky part.

Now, sometimes I just go ahead and cut so that the leek will be in small circles (like if you were cutting an onion into rings.)  But this time I wanted them a bit smaller so they’ll distribute into more smaller pieces when i make my quiche tomorrow.  I cut a line down the middle.  And, just like with cutting an onion, don’t cut through that hairy end.  It holds the thing together for you naturally.

Use your big chef knife for this part.  You are done with your paring knife now.

Next you want to cut the leek into probably about 1/4 inch slices.  Cut the whole thing up until you get right up on the hairy end  (throw that hairy part away.)

<—–It will look about like this when you’re done.  But you will totally see dirt all over the pieces.  NOW is the time to wash them.  It’s easier to remove the dirt when you can separate the pieces.

I can’t seem to figure out what I’ve done here, but for the life of me I can’t get this picture to turn the right direction…so, if you were wondering, I do live in a place where the same laws of gravity apply.  Our water does not come out sideways.

Wash and separate your leeks now.  This is the easy way to do it.  I promise.

Once you’ve done this and dried them on a paper towel, you’re ready to get cooking!

Tomorrow I will give you a fantastic recipe for quiche that even men like.

To Pose or Not To Pose….Maternity Photos

April 13, 2011 by Logan 7 Comments

I was talking with some girlfriends this morning about maternity photographs.  I personally am not a fan, but have seen some that are tastefully done.  My take on it is that my pregnant belly isn’t nearly as darling as what’s going to come out of it, so no need to preserve forever the memory of my popped out belly button encircled by my hands making a heart shape….just not gonna go there personally people.  If that’s your bag….good for you.  I bet you are a really cute pregnant person….or you could be delusional….I will not venture to say which if I don’t know you.

Anyhow, one of my friends reminded me this morning of the MOST hilarious email that I got back at the end of last year.  It’s from a blog post from The Pregnant Chicken and it’s just absolutely hysterical.  I had to search back through my emails to find it, but find it I did….and now I’m gonna share it with you.  Thanks to The Pregnant Chicken, I give you the following…. (My comments are in black…everything in green is from The Pregnant Chicken….want to make sure to give credit where credit is due!)

In case you may want to capture your pregnancies in a photograph to preserve the wonder of life here are a few gems from awkwardfamilyphotos.com which may provide a little inspiration.

“Karen, seeing as you’re pregnant, let’s put you at the top of the family photo where the air is thinner. Karen? Karen?!?!”

I think the thing that is MOST disturbing to me is that this was a CHRISTMAS CARD….I can appreciate what they were trying to do here but if your Christmas photo looks like it should have a “becka, becka, bow wow” soundtrack playing in the background, then you may want to reconsider the card.

I can’t decide whether I like the garbage bag dress, the swamp or his black socks in the water better.

“That’s it, Steve. A little further back, a little further. Now crouch down. Perfect!” I think the ex-boyfriend may have been the photographer in this one.

This reminds me of a picnic. A good idea in theory but an uncomfortable mess in practice.

Words can’t describe this photo. Oh wait a minute, they can!

Okay, I actually love this photo but the toe shoes are the real kicker. Ha kicker!

“It’s going to be a good year, Laura. A very Goodyear indeed.”

At first I thought “Nothing symbolizes maternity better than a watermelon and a gun” and then I thought “Actually, nothing *does* symbolize maternity better than a watermelon and a gun”. Bravo Mad’am.

Like the previous Christmas card, if it looks skeezy when nobody is pregnant, then a baby bump ain’t saving it so don’t do it. A helpful holiday tip we can all tuck in our pockets.

“If I’m holding the baby then why do I still feel fat?”

Um, yeah. No. I’m just going to go with a solid no on this one.

Why do I feel like this woman was talked into this? I could see her thinking, “I’m just too tired to argue plus the kids won’t be able to take off because hockey equipment will slow them down and I’ll hold their heads. I’m sure it will look fine.”

A few people have past along some other great photos and I just had to share.

The Pregnant Chicken said it best….There simply aren’t enough pregnancy/gun pictures.

Lastly, I wanted to show you all a brilliant shots that these adoptive parents did. To see the whole series, check out the photographer’s site. Do you think they would adopt me too because I love them. It’s no naked headstand, but I love them. – The Pregnant Chicken

Hope you all got a laugh out of that….just had to share.  Nothing gets you in a good mood faster than other people’s interestingness!  It’s like people watching at the airport….or better yet, the fair!

In a few minutes I’m going to post on how to cut a leek….just couldn’t pass this up for you today though!

PS. I removed a mortifyingly nude maternity picture after I originally posted thisRelated Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger... upon a realization that the entire post could be blocked from some computers with child lock controls in place.  If that was your favorite picture and you thought it was the most hilarious thing ever…Pregnant Chicken still has it on her site!

Some tips…for Airline Travel

April 12, 2011 by Logan 3 Comments

Sorry for my silence over the past few days.  We headed out to Texas to visit the Hubs’ family for a few days and I didn’t have any access to the computer while I was there.  It was a fast and furious trip with 2 days of full travel and 2 days just for fun.  It was a good visit, but I am flat worn out now after traveling with 2 small children…one of which was a

lap child!

And no…that is not my child below.  In almost 14 total hours of in-air travel, my baby napped all of 35 minutes.

Thankfully, both kids were actually really well-behaved (a great feat for a 14 month old in particular)…ridiculously active, but well-behaved.  Probably a result of my incredible parenting and the baby’s uncanny ability at the ripe age of 1 to follow my instructions perfectly.  (More likely though is that we’ve been praying over this trip pretty much since we booked it!)

Here is a more accurate picture of our trip —–>

Yep…that about covers it!  That’s the only picture I have because it was taken on my phone…

And as we were traveling, I decided to make a mental list of things I think all travelers should keep in mind when traveling….lucky for you, I’m about to share.

1.  Southwest Airlines is great, but please be advised that if your itinerary says “direct” flight…it means that you will still stop along the way.  You won’t have to change planes, but your flight will be considerably longer when you stop in say Nashville, on your way to Denver.  Or you may stop in Houston on your flight from Dallas to Greenville, SC.  This stopping will add considerable time to your flight duration and also make your lap child all the more restless.  Also, the fasten seat belt sign sound will likely wake up your 35 minute sleeping baby, even if he/she does sleep through the landing.

2.  Just because you and your spouse think that your perfume or scented lotion is fantastic and that you should douse yourself in it with reckless abandon, does not mean that your fellow travelers will agree.  Keep in mind that your Chanel #9 in seat 14A mixed with Bath and Body Works Cherry Blossom in seat 14B, mixed with Patchouli in 14C, makes for some serious nausea in 14D across the aisle.  Noone would mind if we all use a little common SCENTS and stick with say….plain old soap.

3.  If a baby near you is yelling happily…do not sneer at the parents because it is making noise.  Be thankful it’s not screaming its’ head off in discontent.

4.  If a baby near you is screaming its’ head off in discontent, do not sneer at the parents because it is screaming bloody murder.  Trust me…the parents are far more mortified than you could possibly be.

5.  If you are a creepy man, do not stare at someones children for long periods of time…or at all for that matter.  Keep in mind, you are creepy and parents are very leery of creepy people.  Especially do not stare at someones child while they are awkwardly having to change a poopy diaper across their laps and the lap of their 5 year old during the flight.  That is really awkward…and you are even more creepy now.  The poop has to go…see #2 for the reason why.

6.  Make sure that if you are a mom traveling with small children that you wear a crew neck tshirt.  You will be doing your very best to keep your lap child somewhere close between seats 14D, E, and F and will likely have some shirt tugging.  Unless you want to flash the creepy man from #5, I suggest that you dress for a very active trip.

7.  Make sure to pack tons of snacks…snacks are very helpful to keep your kids busy.  As are crayons…although those are tricky when you have an active 1 year old who is really just interested in snacking on the crayons as well.

8.  Take refillable water bottles…like a Nalgene or Camelbak bottle.  You can refill them at water fountains and put those little drink mixes to go to add flavor (like Crystal Lite or Koolaid…preferably nothing with red dye.)  Be aware that with the change in cabin pressure though, when you open your drinking-spout-style Camelbak bottle with red dye Koolaid, it will wildly spray its contents all over the sleeping lady in seat 14F.  Thankfully the lady in 13F is a heavy sleeper.  Good thing she likes those satin eye cover thingys.

9. Be nice to your flight attendants.  If so, they will often let you stand in the back to attempt to lull your baby to sleep.  When the baby doesn’t sleep though, they will often allow it to press lighted buttons that show the waste level of the lavatory for 30 minutes or more.

10.  When you finally arrive at your destination, scream that you’re about to throw up and you will get off the plane much faster than if you didn’t.

Glad to be back on my home turf for sure.  Spring has fully sprung and after a trip to the grocery store today, I plan to enjoy it!

Have a great day!

PS.  Some of the above list is fictitious…but a good portion of it is not!  I’m probably not going to spoil the fun by telling you which is which though!  Also, I’m linking here to Top Ten Tuesday on OhAmanda.com for more fun!
