The Wrestle {Allume Devotional}

July 2, 2012 by Logan Leave a Comment

I gotta be honest with ya’ll. I feel like I’ve got nothing to offer by way of great spiritual perspective right now. I should…oh I should. I’ve fasted, I’ve feasted, I’ve focused, I’ve cried, and I’ve tried….and still….I wrestle.

A friend said to me the other day, “Logan, I bless you in your wrestle.”

And I’ve been thinking about that. What it looks like to wrestle well with God? Not turning away, or running away, but just an all out roll-on the-ground-because-I-can’t-seem-to-figure-it-out-but-have-to-get-back-close-to-Him wrestle.

It’s not a piddly thumb wrestle. And it’s not a looks-fancy-but-is-really-fake-blood WWF-style wrestle either. This is like a little boy wrestling with his dad….learning how to really fight, but truth is that you never learn how to fight well if you don’t learn how to wrestle well first. You never learn how to overcome if you don’t hang in til the end.

Spill It…{The Ridiculous Contents of 1 Woman’s Purse}

June 28, 2012 by Logan 6 Comments

purse contentsI bought a new purse last week before I went to Haven.  My old one was getting sort of raggedy looking, and when I found the perfect platinum colored new purse for just $20, it was a no-brainer.

I don’t know if you’re one of those people who switch purses to go with your outfit or what, but I personally do NOT fall into that category.  So…I have to periodically clean out my purse so that I can find things that I actually use.  Maybe you’re the same way.  Or maybe you keep the same purse, but like your car, it’s kept spic and span.  I just went all out this time and dumped the whole thing onto my kitchen table.  The contents made me laugh and my 6-year-old said the picture above looks like one of the “Seek and Find” book pages he favors.

So, in the instance that you want to feel more normal…or you might need to just know that the rest of my life isn’t as perfect as my laundry room, I thought we’d have a little fun poking fun at the mess I called the contents of my purse.

I found:

purse contents The essentials at least…

  • wallet, phone, and business cards
  • but wait…there’s a mushed granola bar in this snapshot too (just in case)purse contents

  • Burts Bees hand salve (ok…this is good stuff)
  • Alright, there’s also a full sized Sugar Daddy, a dum dum, bag of mexican gummy pandas, and some old receipts.
  • Looks like there’s a band-aid hiding in there too

purse contents

  • You never know when you might need a brand new USB device?!  Or…an entire bag of picture hangers.

purse contents

  • Or how about school pictures?  A bouncy ball?  Sunglasses cleaner (which I’ve actually become addicted to using since getting my first nice pair of sunglasses in almost 10 years.)  Or how about a few more dum dums, pens, pens, pens, chapstick, chapstick, more receipts, wrappers, a flashlight?  Oh wait…don’t forget that you never know when you might need some pesos…bills and coins.  The white box is a tiny first aid kit, and that strange looking circle on top…well, let’s take a closer look at that….

purse contents

  • GROSS!  So, upon further inspection, I discovered that this is a Mexican coin with a couple of craisins really smooshed onto it.  That really spells AWESOME doesn’t it?! EWW!

purse contents

  • And last, but not least…a full pack of Fun Flossers.  For you know, those moments where your kids just can’t wait to get flossing?!?!  Say what?

So there you have it…the story of my life…in one purse.

*Find anything you think is particularly funny?  What’s the most random thing you’ve ever found in your purse?  Please, help me feel more normal and let me know in the comments below!  Whatcha hiding in your bag?

Laundry Room! The Big Reveal!

June 27, 2012 by Logan 13 Comments

Well friends, it took about 4 times as long as we thought to finish our laundry room re-do, but it’s pretty much done now.  (Well except for where the plumber cut the sink hole in the counter too large and we had to order a new counter top.  Still waiting on that, but such is life.)

I have been dreaming up this laundry room for YEARS, and I’m happy to say that it both functions and looks just like it did in my dreams.  Uh-mazing!

And really, pictures speak more than 1000 words, so I’ll get to it!

Here’s what it looked like before…. (in all it’s standard messy glory!)

laundry room before

And… after a full on gut-it-to-the-studs, and a few weeks of carpentry, and plumbing, and electrical mojo….

We now have this….

Doesn’t it just make you want to curl up and do…

Laundry?!?!

How bout a little more?

Loads of FunBecause inquiring minds often want to know….the paint color on the wall is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, the ceiling is BM Palladian Blue, and the door is BM Wythe Blue.  (I had the rest of my downstairs doors painted in the Wythe Blue too…that’s been on my dreaming list for about 3 years as well.)

laundry room ceilingI had beadboard sheets installed on the ceiling and I love the combination of it with the schoolhouse light for a vintage feel.  We added can lights as well which really brighten the space.  The center light and the cans are on different switches too, so I can keep it low should I find myself in there in the late hours of the night or wee hours of the morning.

laundry roomI LOVE these floors.  They’re designer vinyl tiles, and at just $3.02/sq ft they don’t break the bank!  My inspiration was from this fabulous house I found HERE (pictured below).  Obviously though, those floors were some super old and worn gorgeous stone….which I wasn’t going to be able to afford to put in my own home.  I also happen to prefer the tiles on the diagonal to add visual interest to the space.  I think for a cheap-o version, they definitely create the look though huh?

checkerboard floor

From LivingAgency.com

laundry roomI really wanted to have a countertop where I could fold clothes and whatnot, but I passionately didn’t want a frontloading washing machine.  Most of the people I asked had mixed reviews on the front loaders, and I HATE that moldy smell they all seem to get after some time too.  I didn’t want to have to clean my WASHING machine all the time, or have to leave the door open either (because the washer is on the left immediately as you enter the room anyways.)  We ended up buying a top loading machine with front loading technology and I LOVE it!  Never smells, I don’t have to cram it full since gravity is on my side, it cleans amazingly, and doesn’t smell.  So I bought a mismatched set (the dryer is from a different model set.)  It’s worth the sacrifice of the partial counter space to not have a room that wreaks!  My advice should you ever find yourself in this situation…buy the best washer you can find for your $$, and buy the best rated dryer that you can for your $$…and forget about if they were “made” to go together.  Your life is about what works for you…not what a manufacturer tells you that you should do.

laundry room

Before, part of the problem was the ginormous main electrical panel on the wall.  We had a custom cabinet maker work around the thing so that it looks even, but is still accessible inside the door!  Check it out!

laundry roomAnd yes….I have already crammed it full!

The width of the doors couldn’t be the same so I just had him put a little faux piece for the doors to close on…see there on the left…that funny little piece just above the duster?!  And for the record….who are we kidding with a duster in there?!  As if I actually use that thing?!laundry room

Here’s a little more of the storage!

The upper center section holds the tall drink dispensers that I use for parties perfectly!  I even went to town with some storage containers for all of our crafting supplies!

And perhaps the happiest part of all for me, still needs some organizing, but look….I have a pantry!  FINALLY!

laundry roomTHE BEST thing I did in this entire room may very well be having the can shelving put onto the doors on the pantry side! Oh my words…LOVE being able to see things clearly!  And inside the cabinet, I put those stair-step expandable shelves to help see cans and things as well.  (You can get those at places like Bed, Bath, and Beyond or probably on Amazon too.)  And yes…my husband really likes boxed tacos…I’m not too proud to tell you that I’m all about some Old El Paso for a quick dinner on a night where I haven’t made a plan!

So…just a few more beauty shots…because they make me happy!

laundry room

Dare I say it….

I might even like doing laundry now!

Now if I could just snap my fingers and get it to put itself away like this gal…

Plum Cobbler {Fruit Cobbler Recipe}

June 25, 2012 by Logan 3 Comments

I was at Haven last week in Atlanta and had a blast meeting loads of talented and fun women!  My roommates and I got deliriously silly one night and made a vlog that I’ll share with you soon.  I still can’t believe I did it, but I did!  And it is most definitely ridiculous!  So…more to come on that!

Today though, before my baby had to have his tooth pulled, I took my kiddos to our neighbor’s garden to pick green beans, squash and plums.  As we speak, my countertop is covered in gorgeous sweet and tart plums that are just begging to be sliced up and tossed into a cobbler.  I just had to share!

So here you go…easiest cobbler recipe ever. You can use this same basic recipe with lots of different kinds of fruit.  The last time I made it, I used peaches and blackberries, but my MOST favorite version of this is to use tart plums to make it…delish!

Ingredients:
3/4 stick butter
3 c. fruit (for peaches, plums, etc…peel and slice)
1 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 c. milk

Preheat oven to 350. Melt the butter in a baking dish (I usually do it in about a 9×13 because I like lots of the crunchy top parts) in the oven. While the butter is melting mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and milk. Once the butter is melted in the dish evenly pour fruit into the dish. Then pour the mixture evenly over the fruit and do not mix up or anything. Bake at 350 for about 30-45 minutes or til it’s nice and brown on the top. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream.

Summer Fun and the Haven Conference!

June 18, 2012 by Logan 7 Comments

Summer is here and that means that I have both of my kids at home…all day…every day.  I have to admit that I kinda forgot what that looks like.

Last week my hubs was gone to a work conference in Orlando from Sunday morning thru Friday.  My kids were insane the entire week! INSANE!

I took them to my parents house for a couple of days thinking the change of scenery would help…and it kinda did, but not enough.  I think my 6-year-old is just bored.  With lots of constant activity during the school year, the slower pace of summer that I’ve been looking forward to has been driving him nuts.

To try to spice things up a bit, I’m planning to invite some friends and go next week to a local creamery for a tour.  Picking blueberries is on the schedule for summer, and of course some pool time.  Won’t be long before we’re headed to the beach either.  We drove up to Biltmore for a day the weekend before last, and I’m trying to get the courage to bike the Swamp Rabbit trail in Greenville one day with the kids myself while the Hubs is working.  Any joiners want to come with me?!

I’ve seen lots of people around the internet making fun summer To-Do Lists and feel sort of inspired to do the same.  I figured I’d poll ya’ll and find out what your favorite summer activities to do with kids are?!  So, help me stave off boredom and invent a list of oh-so-fun activities to pass the summer in the comments section below?!

After my crazy week last week, I’m even more excited to head to Atlanta this Wednesday to meet up for the Haven Conference!  It’s going to be s fun few days of DIY and creative bloggers meeting up for workshops on loads of Do-It-Yourself topics as well as blogging tips and tricks!  I’m looking forward to the workshops, but most of all, I’m excited to see friends I’ve made through blogging as well as a whole slew of friends I met at the Relevant Conference (now Allume) this past October!  There are so many fun new people I don’t even know yet that I can’t wait to meet as well!  It’s going to be a blast!

Before I go too, I’m going to finally be able to show you pictures of my renovated laundry room!  It took about 4 times longer than anticipated, but it’s mostly done now!  Stay tuned this week for that!

Coffee for Melissa & A Giveaway!!!

June 11, 2012 by Logan 8 Comments

You all may remember when I wrote about my dear friend Melissa a few months ago. She is battling stage 4 breast cancer and needs our help. Melissa’s husband Brad is self-employed, they have 3 small children (ages 7, 3, and 22 months,) and the medical bills needed to treat the cancer are stacking up faster than you can drink a cup of coffee.
My amazing friend Jessica, co-host of Allume Social, and her husband, Jordan, recently started a coffee roasting company called Avodah. Before I tell you how these things relate, let me give you a quick run-down on this awesome company!

The essence and mission of Avodah Coffee – and the basis for our name– is our heart to serve.

Our purpose is to combine our passion for coffee with our passion for missional living. We desire to offer upscale luxury quality coffee at an everyday affordable price, and make the world a better place through our business.

The word Avodah is Hebrew, and describes action that is simultaneously work, worship and service. It means that the work we do is more than a job – that bringing the awesome to our customers is about serving you, the farmers who grow the coffee, and those who benefit from the organizations we support. All this combines under a lifestyle of Avodah, through which all we do becomes an offering. When you see Avodah, you know you’re getting great coffee with a great purpose

Here at Avodah Coffee, all of the coffee we purchase is done so with sustainability and quality in mind. We choose the beans and craft our blends to bring you the best, while serving the people who produce the coffee by purchasing from companies and farmers who engage in ethical business practices – whether through official certification or openly practiced direct trade. In addition, we give a portion of the proceeds from every sale to charitable organizations that exist to change the world.

I’ve been drinking Avodah for a few weeks now, and I LOVE it. Fact of the matter is that, I’m a coffee snob. I mean, so much so that I don’t even like Starbucks. Gasp! And in addition to the facts that my friends own Avodah and they’re selling a kick-butt product…the thing that gets me on board as much as these reasons is that Avodah is serious about changing lives with more than just a cup of really great coffee. Avodah is doing life beyond the beans.

They’re setting out to help us change Melissa’s life.

When you purchase Avodah Coffee through the “Melissa’s Cancer Fund” product option, Avodah will donate $2.50 from each bag to help offset the medical expenses that could cripple this amazing family of faith as they walk this journey of cancer.

I’m a coffee drinker…meaning, I’m drinking it every day. And if you drink coffee, I have to ask you….what’s keeping you from changing a life with every sip you take? You don’t have to know a person to know how you can change their life. Here’s a chance friends. It’s something you’re already buying. It’s already on your list….forgo the coupon for the 8 o’clock coffee on sale and buy a bag that will not only brighten your morning, but will tangibly change the life of this woman and her family.

Avodah is making a difference. Now you can too.

**Jordan, from Avodah, hooked me up with this super sweet widget below that will let you purchase Avodah coffee from right here on Life for Dessert! Sweet huh?! If you want to learn a little bit more about the products Avodah offers, you can check them out HERE. Just make sure if you stick around on their site, that when you check out, you do so under the Melissa’s Cancer Fund product option!

Between now and next Monday, June 18th at midnight, you can enter to win a FREE bag of Avodah Coffee!  To enter, order a bag of coffee to support Melissa’s Cancer Fund and leave a comment here letting me know you’ve done so!  I’ll announce a winner next week!

Help Support our sister Melissa as she struggles with cancer. Her husband and three young children are standing by her side as she fights this illness – and so can we. With your purchase, Avodah Coffee will donate $2.50 from each bag to Melissa and her family to offset her medical expenses.

Just for Laughs…from the farm

June 7, 2012 by Logan 1 Comment

I went to a goat farm with a friend yesterday.  She was on milking duty (the goats are shared between a few families) and we’d been wanting to hang out, so she invited us to join her and her kids.

My boys LOVED it.  Made me want to have lots of land and maybe even a couple of goats, or chickens.

This farm had alpacas also.

Alpacas are kind of rude.  They basically hock loogies (sp?) and spit them at you if you get too close.

I risked it though to get this picture…because the thought I had about it made me laugh, and I just had to share with you all.

This is what he’d look like if Justin Bieber was an alpaca….

What’s Cooking?! Pad Thai Salad

June 6, 2012 by Logan 3 Comments

In an effort to keep things different in my fridge around here without starving while I’m on the Daniel Fast, I’m trying out some different salads here lately.  This pad thai salad that I made for the first time today is from one of my favorite cookbooks, Fresh Everyday by Sara Foster.

I’ll make it again.  It is really yummy!  And instead of chopping cabbage, I used a bag of shredded cabbage (that I had leftover from making the most amazing fish tacos last week.) I think I’d do it again that way too.

So here you go friends!  (Daniel fast friendly even if you use brown rice pad thai noodles and leave out the sugar in the dressing!)

Pad Thai Salad

pad thai

Serves 4 to 6

1/2 pound flat rice noodles
1/4 pound snow peas or sugar snap peas, stem ends and strings removed and blanched
1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and julienned (about 2 tablespoons)
1/4 small head of Savoy or Napa cabbage, cored and thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
2 scallions, minced (white and green parts)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
1 cup unsalted peanuts, roasted and finely chopped
2 ounces bean sprouts or pea shoots (about 1 cup)
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Pad Thai Dressing (recipe follows)

1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Remove the pan from the heat and immerse the noodles in the hot water. Let the noodles stand in the hot water for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are tender, but still firm. Drain in a colander, rinse under cold water, and drain well. Turn the drained noodles into a large bowl.

2. Julienne the snow peas and toss them into the bowl with the noodles. Add the ginger, cabbage, scallions, cilantro, chives, half of the ground peanuts, half of the sprouts, the red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Drizzle with the Pad Thai dressing and toss gently, taking care not to break the noodles. Serve immediately, garnished with the remaining peanuts and sprouts.

Note: If you want to make this salad in advance, cover and refrigerate and garnish just before serving. You may also need to toss the noodles with a little more dressing because they tend to absorb the dressing.

Pad Thai Vinaigrette

This recipe makes twice what you need for the Pad Thai Salad. There are so many ways to use the leftovers: as dressing for a sandwich, salad, sliced tomatoes, or avocado slices.

Makes about 1 cup

2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons Thai fish sauce (nam pla)
2 tablespoons tamarind paste
2 tablespoons light soy sauce or tamari
2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger (1-inch piece)
2 cloves garlic, minced
Grated zest and juice of 1 orange
Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper or chili paste

Whisk the vinegar, fish sauce, tamarind paste, soy sauce, olive oil, ketchup, sugar, ginger, garlic, orange zest and juice, lemon zest and juice, and crushed red pepper or chili paste in a small bowl. Use immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Los Luchadores…The Fighters

June 1, 2012 by Logan 1 Comment

In Spanish, the word “Luchador” means “fighter.”  Technically it refers to “free fighting” or “free wrestling” and is a pretty big deal in Mexico.

I think it’s pretty much the Mexican version of WWF.

The Luchadors wear masks to cover their faces.  Apparently, sometimes the loser of a match has to remove his mask…exposing him for the mere man beneath.  Seems to be some form of losing the “superman” sort of status.

You may be surprised to learn that in our All-American home, I’m not just the mother of warriors, but also of  little luchadors.

One of them will always be exposed as the mere man in any competition though, because Uncle Buds (my brother) only brought one mask home from Mexico as a birthday present to my oldest.  It is pretty much awesome, and both of my boys love it.

But as with any real “fighters,” injuries happen.

My littlest luchador suited up the other day, complete with mask and coincidentally matching superhero cape I made a few years ago for my oldest’s Christmas gift.  It is a crazy cool cape and took me quite a bit of work.  The combination of these 2 items really make for a pretty stinking professional luchador look if I do say so myself.  Don’t you think?

It’s a terrible picture, snapped on my phone in a hurry, but you get the idea.

Well, Little Luchador was so excited about his get-up the other day that he ran full-speed ahead into my room to show me.  Unfortunately, luchador masks are sized mostly for grown-ups, and Little Luchador had impaired vision….as in, I don’t think he could see a thing.

He ran mouth first into my knee…and it hurt us both.

Remember a few months back when this same little bruiser endured another oral trauma?  Well, $600, a crown on his front tooth, and just 8 months later, he’s knocked his tooth loose again.  His expensive crowned tooth that we justified would cost us about 30 cents a day to provide him with a full set of teeth until he’d naturally lose it closer to age 7, might not actually even make it even a year.  My rudimentary math tells me that at this rate, we’ve paid close to $2.50 per day to have a tooth.

It’s the cost I guess of raising warriors….and Luchadors.

*** How about you?  What’s the cost of raising warriors in your life?  Financial?  Relationships?  Maybe you’ve even moved somewhere for your kids?  Whatever it is, if we want our kids to be super people….there’s gonna be cost somewhere.  And most of the time, the price is for more than just teeth…

Life in the Fast Lane

May 30, 2012 by Logan 11 Comments

So… I’m starting a 21-day fast on Friday.

It’s not a no-food-for-40-days-and-nights kind of thing, but the intention of it is the same really.  The point of a fast is to seek greater communion with God by using food promptings and hunger pangs to push you towards time with Him.  That’s a gross synopsis of something people write full books about, but for my intents and purposes…that’s what we’re gonna say about it right here, right now.

I wrote a post for Allume a little over a week ago for why I’m going to be doing this.  HERE is what I said about my reasons for fasting on the Allume site.

In my sphere and around blogland lately, I’ve noticed a general weariness and season of dryness for a lot of people.  And with the events of my actual life over the past few months, it’s really no wonder that I’ve felt like the Lord and I have been going through a “rough patch.”  Not that I’m not hearing from Him, or feeling loved on sometimes, because I am….but mostly there’s just been a break in the level of trust.  To walk so trustingly through 3 pregnancies that never make it full term and then to have a 4th even farther along than the others….well, it’s shaken me up a bit.  I’ve been angry, and sad, and honestly, not so sure that I even want to walk down the road of pregnancy again beyond the theorhetical idea that I’d like to do it.  In reality…I’m tired of being fruitlessly sick and pregnant.  I’m tired of the physical rollercoaster.  I’m tired of my body being through the ringer. I’m tired of not wanting or being able to even have sex because I’ve been bleeding or puking or having awful surgeries since pretty much November.  And for the record…my husband is pretty tired of that too.  For a million different reasons, this season has left me feeling kinda really dry in my relationship with the Lord.

Something has got to give.  And I need some answers to some questions.  Not questions that I won’t ever understand like “Why did this happen?”, but more things like “What’s next for our family?  Pregnancy?  Do I want to go there?  Adoption?  It’s been on our hearts always anyhow.  Where do we go from here, and how do I get back to that place of lots of trust?”

So…I’m fasting for 21 days.  21 days because apparently it takes 3 weeks to really break a habit, or in this case a pattern of some spiritual lethargy.  Starting this Friday June 1 (because 21 days is easy to count when you start from 1) I’m going to be doing a Daniel Fast.

And the reason I’m telling you here on Life for Dessert is because while I’m not going to moan and groan about it (biblically speaking that sort of ruins it), I will probably share related recipes, things the Lord teaches me, and who knows what else.  I also wanted to give any of you all out there the opportunity to join in a fast if you just need some encouragement, wisdom, answers, or clarity from the Lord.  I introduced the fast on Allume, but whether you’re a christian, female, blogger or not, I’d like to invite you to join in this time of pursuit of the Lord.

I’ll be tweeting along with anyone else who wants to do it at #allumefast, so if you want to join in, please do.  Also, I’m going to include a linky below for blog posts from any of you who would like to join in, share about what you expect from the Lord during this time or what He’s leading you to fast from/about.  Sometimes doing a thing in community is just the way to tell the Lord that we’re crying out and expecting great things from Him.  And if you just need a little encouragement or accountability…well, now you’ve got it.

**Are you in a dry season?  Have you ever felt the Lord leading you to fast?  How’d it go?  Wanna join me?

Link up below if you want!  Will be praying for each of you as we seek the Lord fervently during from June 1-21st!
